Assisting Member States on climate change and health

WHO/Europe aims to strengthen national capacities and improve the resilience and adaptive capacity of health systems to deal with the adverse health effects of climate change. WHO/Europe assists Member States on climate change and health in:

  • conducting climate change and health vulnerability and adaptation assessments;
  • developing and implementing the health component of national adaptation plans;
  • implementing country projects on climate change and health;
  • strengthening the climate resilience and environmental sustainability of health systems;
  • developing national heat–health action plans;
  • developing national tools, guidance and training packages on climate change and health.

WHO/Europe supports the Health and Climate Change Global Survey, which is conducted every 3 years and forms the basis of WHO’s monitoring of global, regional and national health sector progress on building health resilience to climate change and identifying opportunities for health co-benefits from climate mitigation.

The results of the surveys are used to compile country profiles on health and climate change, published jointly by WHO and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

These outputs provide health decision-makers with evidence-based, timely and relevant information regarding the threats to human health from climate change; progress on health adaptation, resilience and mitigation priorities; and opportunities for action.
