The World Health Organization (WHO) is undertaking a scoping review on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in family planning programmes. The review aims to map how AI-enabled systems, technologies and tools are being applied in family planning to strengthen implementation and scale-up of family planning services and programmes.
As part of this review, WHO is seeking to identify grey literature and practice-based evidence that may not be readily available through academic databases. We are particularly interested in experiences from governments, civil society and community-based organizations, implementing partners, researchers and other organizations working in family planning and sexual and reproductive health and rights.
What are we looking for?
We welcome examples of documented experiences involving the use of AI systems, technologies or tools in family planning, including topics related to:
Family planning counselling, information, and decision-making
Supporting informed choice and contraceptive method selection
Family planning service delivery and quality improvement
Demand generation, communication, and client engagement
Contraceptive uptake, continuation, or access and method switching
Supply chain management, forecasting, and contraceptive commodity availability
Provider decision support, training, or supervision
Programme planning, monitoring, or implementation or evaluation
Prediction or identification of populations or clients who may benefit from family planning information or services.
Other applications of AI that support family planning programmes or outcomes
We are particularly interested in country and programme-level experiences, including examples documenting what was implemented, how AI was used, who was involved, and any reported results, lessons learned, challenges, or opportunities.
What types of materials are we seeking?
Relevant materials may include:
Technical or programme reports
Case studies and implementation reports
Policy briefs and guidance documents
Programme evaluations
Research reports and working papers
Pre-prints
Conference proceedings or abstracts
Theses and dissertations
Other documented programme or implementation experiences
Materials may be published in any year, language or country.
We are especially interested in materials that provide evidence or learning from real-world implementation, including experiences that may not yet have resulted in a peer-reviewed publication.
How to contribute:
If you or your organization has documented experience, reports, publications, case studies, evaluations, or other materials relevant to the use of AI in family planning, we would be grateful if you could share them with us.
Please submit using this form: https://forms.gle/cvawHnzdhJNeHYPM9
The submission form will request:
Title of the document or resource
Organization/author(s)
Country or countries covered
Year of publication or completion
Language of Publication
Brief description of how AI is being used in relation to family planning
Link to the document or resource, where available
An uploaded copy of the document or publication (if available)
Your contributions will help ensure that the scoping review captures not only published academic research, but also practical experience and locally generated evidence from programmes and communities around the world.
Deadline for submissions: October 30th 2026
Thank you for helping us build a more comprehensive understanding of how AI is currently being used, what is being learnt from its implementation and where it may offer opportunities to strengthen and scale up family planning programmes and services.
