Hepatitis B virus among pregnant women

Testing pregnant women for HBV infection is the first step in preventing mother-to-child transmission of HBV. It identifies women who require further assessment and potential treatment and informs follow-up of exposed infants.
The indicator also provides information on HBV epidemiology among women of reproductive age.
This indicator also monitors progress towards elimination of mother-to-child transmission (EMTCT) of hepatitis B.

The indicator also provides information on HBV epidemiology among women of reproductive age.
This indicator also monitors progress towards elimination of mother-to-child transmission (EMTCT) of hepatitis B.
(i) Percentage of pregnant women attending antenatal care (ANC) services who were tested for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) during pregnancy.
(ii) Percentage of pregnant women attending ANC services who tested positive for HBsAg among those tested.
(iii) Percentage of HBV-infected pregnant women eligible for antiviral prophylaxis according to national policy or WHO recommendations who received treatment during pregnancy.

(i) HBV screening during pregnancy; antenatal HBsAg testing; PMTCT of HBV; EMTCT;
(ii) HBV prevalence in pregnancy; maternal hepatitis B infection; HBsAg positivity
(iii) HBV antiviral prophylaxis; PMTCT of HBV; maternal HBV treatment; antiviral therapy in pregnancy

Country-reported data: The indicator is compiled from routine national programme, surveillance or routine ANC testing and programme monitoring data aggregated from facility and at national level. Data should cover the reporting year and the geographical and population scope reported by the country. Countries should describe whether the data are national or subnational, which sectors and facilities are included, and whether individual-level deduplication or record linkage is used

Numerator: Number of pregnant women tested for HBsAg.

Denominator: Number of pregnant women attending antenatal care services or estimated number of pregnant women in the reporting year

Aggregate country-reported values weighted by the number of women attending ANC when available.

Coverage estimates should be interpreted in the context of national ANC utilization and reporting systems. Differences between countries may reflect reporting practices and health service coverage rather than testing policies alone.
